NHL Starting Goalies

Six Saturday Afternoon Starters Differed From the Projections: DiPietro Wins in Overtime, Annunen in a Shootout, and Jarry Posts Another Shutout

Six of the 12 goalies who started Saturday's afternoon games were not the ones listed first in NHL.com's projected lineups. Michael DiPietro made 37 saves in Boston's overtime win, Justus Annunen won a shootout for Nashville, and Tristan Jarry made 18 saves for his second straight shutout.

Saturday's six afternoon games are a reminder of why we label NHL.com's projected lineups as "expected" rather than "confirmed." Six of the 12 starters were the goalie listed second, not first. Every number below is from the NHL.com box score for that game.

Finished games

Blackhawks 4, Bruins 5 (OT). Both teams went to their second goalie. Michael DiPietro started for Boston instead of the projected Jeremy Swayman and made 37 saves on 41 shots in the overtime win. Arvid Soderblom started for Chicago instead of the projected Spencer Knight and made 27 saves on 32 shots. NHL.com's recap says the Bruins rallied late in the third period.

Blues 5, Red Wings 4. Joel Hofer, as projected, made 24 saves on 28 shots for St. Louis, which scored three times in the third period. John Gibson, confirmed by the Red Wings' game-day host on Saturday morning, made 10 saves on 15 shots.

Lightning 4, Predators 5 (SO). Justus Annunen started for Nashville instead of the projected Juuse Saros and made 22 saves on 26 shots through overtime before the shootout. Andrei Vasilevskiy, as projected, made 29 saves on 33 shots for Tampa Bay.

Oilers 4, Islanders 0. Tristan Jarry made 18 saves for his second shutout in a row, after a 24-save shutout of Calgary on Wednesday. Ilya Sorokin made 20 saves on 23 shots; Edmonton's fourth goal went into an empty net. The Oilers play the Rangers on Sunday, and coach Mike Babcock has named Matt Tomkins for that game, per AP's Stephen Whyno. More in our Sunday update.

Late-afternoon games, in progress

  • Sabres at Kings. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen started for Buffalo, as projected. Anton Forsberg started for Los Angeles instead of the projected Darcy Kuemper, who NHL.com said had skipped Friday's practice for maintenance. Buffalo led 1-0 at our 5:15 p.m. ET check.
  • Senators at Sharks. Samuel Ersson started for Ottawa instead of the projected Jonas Johansson, and Alex Nedeljkovic started for San Jose instead of the projected Yaroslav Askarov. Ottawa led 2-1 at our check. The Senators play at Anaheim on Sunday.

Why projections miss

NHL.com's projected lineups are written the day before, usually from the last practice. Teams often decide in the morning, and on a busy Saturday some coaches rest a starter ahead of a Sunday game or a road trip. That's why the Oct. 31 board only marks a goalie confirmed once a team, a coach or a reporter at the rink names him, or once the game has started. Final saves for the two West Coast games will be on the board after they end. Nothing here is betting advice.
