Rangers Pull James Reimer After One Period of His Debut; Dylan Garand's Workload Stays the Story

James Reimer allowed three goals on eight shots in his first Rangers start and was replaced by Dylan Garand in a 6-3 loss to the Kings. Mike Sullivan took the blame. New York does not play again until Sunday.

Result: Reimer started and was pulled. James Reimer's first start for the New York Rangers lasted one period. The 38-year-old allowed three goals on eight shots against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday and was replaced by Dylan Garand to start the second, NHL.com reports. Los Angeles won 6-3 at Madison Square Garden.

Garand made 15 saves on 17 shots in relief and was charged with the loss, per the official box score. Darcy Kuemper made 23 saves for the Kings, starting as expected (see our Monday board).

What Sullivan said

Coach Mike Sullivan put the decision to start Reimer on himself. He said Reimer may need "a little bit more preparation" before being put in that spot again, and added: "I put him in a tough spot and that's on me," according to NHL.com.

Reimer signed a one-year contract on Sunday after a 35-save shutout on a tryout with AHL Hartford, the AP reports. The first two Kings shots he faced went in: Taylor Ward scored on a breakaway at 1:15 of the first period and Brandt Clarke added another at 4:52, per NHL.com.

Why it matters

The point of signing Reimer was to give Garand a break. Garand had started every game since Igor Shesterkin was injured on Oct. 9 at Washington, and Monday was his ninth straight appearance, per the AP and NHL.com. He had allowed five goals in each of his two previous starts, at Toronto and at Ottawa, the AP notes. Joonas Korpisalo is also injured and was listed as week to week. Monday's loss was New York's third straight and its first at home this season (now 7-6-1).

Who starts next?

Unconfirmed. The Rangers do not play again until Sunday, Nov. 1, at home against the Edmonton Oilers, per the team schedule. Sullivan has not named a starter, and we have not seen any word on when Reimer might start again. The five days off give Garand rest and Reimer practice time. We will add Sunday's starter to the board once the team or a beat reporter reports it.

Background on the signing is in our Reimer preview. More on New York's goalies is on the Rangers tag page. Nothing here is betting advice.
