The New York Rangers have a new option in goal for Monday's 7 p.m. ET game against the Los Angeles Kings at Madison Square Garden. As of Monday morning, though, neither team has said who will start.
Rangers: unconfirmed. On Sunday the Rangers signed veteran James Reimer, 38, to a one-year contract worth $850,000, NHL.com reported. Reimer had been on a tryout with AHL Hartford, where his one start was a 35-save, 2-0 shutout of Providence on Friday. Spencer Martin was assigned to Hartford as part of the move.
The signing comes with Igor Shesterkin out for the season with a lower-body injury he suffered Oct. 9 at Washington, and Joonas Korpisalo still recovering. The New York Post reported that Korpisalo only began skating on his own on Saturday and that Reimer took part in Sunday's optional practice. Coach Mike Sullivan told reporters that "Dylan has had a heavy workload," per the Post. Asked whether Garand's fatigue was physical or mental, he answered "a little bit of both."
Dylan Garand has handled the crease since Shesterkin was hurt. The Rangers' pregame notes list him at 4-3-1 in eight starts this season. The Rangers are 6-0-0 at home, and Adam Fox is set to play his 500th NHL game.
When the Post asked what role he had been promised, Reimer said: "We'll see." So a Monday start for Reimer is possible, but it has not been confirmed. We will update the board when the team or its beat reporters say who starts.
Kings: unconfirmed. Darcy Kuemper and Anton Forsberg were the two goalies at the Kings' Sunday practice in Newark, according to LA Kings Insider. Forsberg started Saturday's loss to the Devils. The same report says Monday's game is the first half of the Kings' first back-to-back of the season, with a game at Chicago on Tuesday. The team has not said which goalie plays which night.
